      Trainee Software Engineer Interview

      Jul 22, 2011

      Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Mphasis in Apr 2011

      Interview

There were 3 rounds only: 1. Online Test (by AspiringMinds) 2. PI 3. Versant English Test (over phone) We expected a GD, but it was scrapped when they told us. Online Test The online test had 4 sections: a. Aptitude b. Technical c. English d. Logical Reasoning I’d rate the difficulty level to 3/5 stars. Each section had a predefined time limit. There was no negative marking, and each question had to be attempted to cruise to the next question. However, if the allotted time lapses in one section, the candidate would be automatically directed to next section, and will not get chance the answer left out questions in previous section. I was making formulas, wasted time in that, and although solved some particular questions, I missed 4-5 questions as my time was over to next section. The Aptitude section was all about simple questions and will put on test accuracy as well as response time. The Technical section had questions from C/C++ (only logical questions, maximum from loops. E.g. Find which statement has error, Find output, What will it return always, etc.), and Data Structure (mostly sorting algorithms). The English section is plain with reading comprehension passages, filling in blanks, synonyms, antonyms, closest match of words, etc. The Logical Reasoning section was common as in most other exams (coding/decoding etc.) Results were declared within an hour. Test cracked!! We were called next day to participate in further rounds of the selection process. Personal Interview This was one-to-one face-off, and in my case was sitting a Project Manager. He chased my whereabouts, interests, project, my ideas, etc. for about 30 minutes (the longest of all!!). I did not have any experience, nor did I ask anyone else for tips or guidance. Only thing I knew and know that my true self is enough to get me any achievement. I did not lie in any case. He asked all the normal questions as expected in any interview, and I was very much social in my answers, as I was linking everything from my personal information to my hobbies to other interests and everything else. I was so much free, that he enjoyed the session really as was expressed. He was impressed very much, as I was relating everything to my real life examples. As he excavated me deep, I was too not reluctant in doing the same, so when given chance, I asked many things about his job responsibilities and challenges, and how he overcomes them. His anecdote in my profile was “Very good communication skills, good analytical skills, and quick learner”. Interview cracked!! Versant Communication Test We were given a test sheet with a phone number, a unique Test Identification Number (TIN), instructions to 6 sections and examples. One section had 12 sentences. We were required to call that number and answer to questions through Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) within specified time. The computer will ask you questions in English (English/UK Accent), and you were to use your own voice to answer to them. E.g Sentence reading, making sentence out of jumbled words the computer tells you, story retelling, sentence repeating, personal question, etc. It was easy but as the accent was different to our common language, I missed out 2 questions completely, and misspelled words in 2-3 questions. It took around 20 minutes. Trick: Listen carefully, use clear voice, normal language that is clear to opposite person, and from noise-free environment. It was not essential to show mastery in language by showing speed or different accent. Flaws of testing system: Once started, the test needs to be completed. You cannot pause and resume, or give again in entirety. If connection disconnects while you are on test, it is finished, and will bring bad luck more possibly. So, use a good connection, test towers on your mobile, have sufficient balance and battery charge (backups). Versant Communication Test cracked!! Q. I think I was selected because A. ..I was confident, smart, spoke from heart, did not utter boilerplate words, and did not represent myself as the perfect candidate. I was down to earth all along as was the Interviewer.
