      Software Engineer Interview

      Interview

TLDR: Don't waste your time and talent on Netgear. Lots of red flags. I didn't see them while interviewing, but looking back I should've noticed them. Netgear is notorious for great hardware and awful software, which is why I stopped using them 6 years ago. Knowing this, I ignored the recruiters who pitched Netgear because bad software probably means bad management of the software team. But after the 4th recruiter pitched them, I decided to interview. I should also note that I never saw the job posted on any site, even Netgear's. The coding test was basically "build a bad app that talks to a badly designed REST API", which was a take home test designed to take 4-8 hours. Then they did a live coding test where you modified the app to grab search wikipedia and go to the first result. Don't worry, you have 40 minutes to research the wiki api and figure out how to integrate it into your app. The first test was a big red flag, especially since the backend was running the manager's free Heroku server. The second test was another. The manager leaving half way through the second test was another. No job posting was also a major red flag. They asked several times what I thought of the process, and I always gave a positive answer. They admitted later that this was a new process, and I was the first to go through it. I was not given an offer. Given the lack of job postings and the strange interview process, I'm not sure there was ever a job to be offered. I suspect I was an unpaid guinea pig.
