      Vehicle Engineer Interview

      Nov 15, 2023
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Newark, NJ
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at NJ TRANSIT (Newark, NJ) in Aug 2023

      Interview

I really felt that the interview threw me off. It was my first and only interview which had a panel including the hiring manager and two others. I felt that the interview itself was just very hard to work with. Certain questions were constructed in a way that made it very difficult to provide a meaningful answer as they wanted it to follow their specific format and, to be quite frank, did not have as much of a proper explanation and did not allow for me to ask questions for clarification. Even when I felt I had enough to respond, it somehow didn't work and I just couldn't seem to understand why approach one or both of these questions in this manner. The technical questions focused a lot on an understanding of their equipment rather than having a generalized understanding of locomotive equipment. This is far different from other technical interviews, which focused more on my approach to engineering issues rather than knowing off the top of my head how each one of their trains performs a certain action. I could be approaching this the wrong way given that I am coming from a different field and have skills that can transfer over, but this interview had to be the most difficult interview I had in my career. I don't think the technical questions were warranted, but I tried to prepare what I could based on the listing and the interview questions were far more stringent than expected. The panel was very knowledgable about the work they do and have that passion, but I think were more interested in hiring someone who already knew what they were doing, even with 2 years of experience required in a specific setting, rather than hiring someone who could gain knowledge and experience and be trained on the go.
