      Assistant Specialty Coffee Manager Interview

      Mar 14, 2015
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Los Angeles, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Nordstrom (Los Angeles, CA) in Jan 2015

      Interview

The process started with a phone interview with a recruiter from corporate. From there it took about a week to find out if I would receive a second interview. That interview was located at a location near the one I applied to, with a different store manager. It took about an hour, and it was a pretty casual interview. From there it took another week before being invited for a third (and what I thought was final) interview with the district manager. This interview also included the store manager I had previously interviewed with and an assistant manager who was training. He asked a lot more questions about my work personality and how I approach situations to ensure that he was placing the right people in the right teams. At the end of the interview he mentioned that should I be selected to move on there would be a fourth interview with his boss. Overall, this isn't a job that you should expect to get hired into right away. At the very least the interview process is going to take a month.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The most difficult question for me was that in the last interview the assistant manager on the interview asked how I would use the resources given to me to improve my job performance in a different way than I had in previous jobs.

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Nordstrom in Jan 2015

      Interview

I was initially contacted by a recruiter from Nordstrom's Seattle headquarters via LinkedIn. She was very friendly, just letting me know they had a position open and that she was interested in discussing it with me. Once I replied, she asked for my email address, to which she forwarded a job description and set up a time to chat over the phone. I was expecting the initial phone to be a little more conversational, but it was definitely a full-on interview. I was asked about the scope of my previous management experience (did I have the final say in hiring decisions and evaluations, etc.), what my biggest contribution was at my previous employer, how had I worked to develop other employees, was I relocatable, why was I interested in Nordstrom, and why was I leaving my current employer. After the phone screening, the recruiter set up an in-person interview with the store manager the position reported to. I have to say, the store manager did something that was just so wonderfully considerate- she called me a few days prior to our scheduled interview to confirm our appointment time and to make sure I had a good contact number for her in case anything came up. I've never experienced that before, and it did a lot to just make me feel valued right from the start. The in-person interview questions were similar to the initial phone screening, along with some discussion of what work schedules would be like and a passing discussion of salary requirements. From there, the store manager set up another phone interview with the regional manager, who was also very friendly, and whose interview style was very informal and conversational. She asked questions about my development at my previous employer, what kind of opportunities I had seen there, how I developed my direct reports, and about my overall style of leadership and direction. She also discussed the possibility of future relocation. Finally, the regional manager set up yet ANOTHER phone interview with the divisional manager. This one was short, only about twenty minutes, and was focused primarily on ensuring values alignment and that I would do well within the framework of Nordstrom's company culture. We also discussed further development and what my long-term goals were. Though the interview process was long (about three weeks from start to finish), each interview was a positive experience, and each person I spoke with seemed to be honest, down-to-earth, and sincere in their desire to just get to know me, to make sure I was someone they could work well with.
