I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Northwestern Mutual (Philadelphia, PA) in Mar 2013
Interview
4 interviews. One with a recruiter, managing director, managing partner with a final presentation of why you are a good fit for the firm. Initially, you have an in person interview with a recruiter who is in the local office where they may bring you on. Afterwards, you will meet the managing director for the district network office that you may work within and he or she will ask you a variety of questions based on the conversation you had with a recruiter. If they would like to move you along to the next phase, round 3, you will meet with the managing partner who basically will look to describe why Northwestern is a great company and opportunity. Beyond that, you will be given case studies to complete before your final interview. you will be asked to gather a census of 10 of your friends and complete diagrams on individuals you will reach out to when first in the business. Final interview is a presentation of this project and they will make you an offer right there and then if they like you.
There were four or five interviews, if you count the meeting with my future mentor. There were also a few personality assessments. Lots of paperwork. The finance industry is tightly regulated.
The first interview was easygoing and went fairly well. We talked a little on myself and what northwestern was all about. Because they wanted to see how I could fit in to their team and what I would bring.

Interview
The process was smooth and straight forward. A lot of behavioral based questions, but relaxed and low stress. First phase is a phone screening followed by a teams or in person meeting.
