      Application

The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at ON24, Inc. (Los Altos, CA) in Jul 2021

      Interview

I was excited about this company because they are in an interesting space. My first four interviews went really well. The hiring manager said they were going to extend me an offer shortly. Then they told me (apologetically) that their CMO now wanted to speak to me too, as he wanted to meet his team. The CMO was very unprofessional during the Zoom session. He yawned (without covering his mouth or apologizing) repeatedly. I tried to provide concise responses so as not to bore him further. Midway through his 9th yawn, I considered ending the call but chose to be professional instead. Then the recruiter got back to me saying that the CMO had further questions. Meanwhile the hiring manager called to “coach” me for the second interview with the CMO, so I could convince him that I qualified for the role. Please. I have over a decade of relevant experience at successful enterprise SaaS companies. The role was a lateral move (with a pay cut that I was okay with because of the excellent fit). If the CMO couldn’t be awake enough to understand this the first time, I didn’t want to join his organization. Other red flags waving furiously: A C-level executive who interfered this much in filling a role 3 levels below him? A director (the hiring manager) and a VP who had little sway over their own hiring process? No, thank you. I withdrew my application. I don’t recommend joining the On24 marketing organization under the current CMO . To be fair, the other members of the product marketing/management team were smart, forthcoming, and professional.
