for the coding interviews: write some code to do some stuff
for the design problem for developers: it's a real problem from their business which they've already solved in a few different ways and are still evolving... lots of great depth there
On the first call, which was not described as a technical phone screen, I was given a programming problem that I only had 15 minutes to solve total--including hearing the problem, describing my solution, and implementing. The interviewer was curt and generally impersonal throughout the call. In the future they should be direct about what their initial phone screen entails with candidates, and tell candidates how to prepare to avoid wasting their time and the interviewee's time.
