      Senior Product Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Parachute Health in Mar 2024

      Interview

I really wanted to say nice things about this company, because the engineers + product people I spoke with were nice and intelligent, but unfortunately their recruitment process on the engineering side of things was extremely unprofessional. To start, its a 7 round interview process that could probably be condensed down into 3 interviews. On top of that, after completing what I thought was the final round, I got a call from the recruiter (who was very spaced out and disorganized throughout the process) to just check in and "see where I was at with things". She told me that the feedback I had received so far was positive, and asked if I had other companies I was talking to, and then asked if a salary that was 10K lower than what I had originally asked for was ok, pretending as if that was what I had initially said was my range. I told her that while parachute was one of my top choices based on the conversations I had, I was finishing up interviews with other firms and that salary would definitely play a role in the firm I chose because I was looking to move to a city that is notoriously HCOL. She then told me they would "try" to reach out later in the week with an update. Towards the end of the week I received what appeared to be an automated email telling me that they were moving forward with other candidates. I received no response when I asked for constructive feedback on what factored into the decision, but it seems to me that the company is trying to take advantage of the current market conditions to find engineers desperate for a job, and then pay them as little as possible. For context, the range on the job posting was 145-195. 145 for a senior engineer role is insultingly low, but i'm sure there are people out there desperate for a job who will take it. Regardless, playing games like this after putting someone through 7 rounds of interviews is both extremely disrespectful to a candidates time, and also not the strategy you should employ if you want to build a strong engineering team, since most quality engineers, even in the current market, have multiple offers on the table when its time to make a decision about where they want to land for their next position.
