I have been approached by a friend of mine and asked whether I would be interested in a role as Data Engineer at Patagonia Europe. The first couple of meetings were very pleasant and I spoke to a total of three different people over the stretch of two months. I really appreciated that I could talk directly to the people I would be working with and we came to the conclusion that I would certainly be capable of fulfilling the demanded tasks. The position was estimated to be filled by July or August and I was told that I fulfilled all neccessary criteria to start the position and that I could hopefully start as soon as possible.
Unfortunately shortely thereafter, it turned out that things had changed and I would have to go through another round of talks and that the position had to first be posted officially. Some of the talks would then be with people I had already talked to previously. During some of those talks, I was encouraged to share my concerns or doubts about starting the position and I was told that it would be safe to do so. I stated a couple of my concerns, but made very clear that they were in no way deal-breakers to me and that those were based on gut feelings and could easily be remedied.
All in all, the whole process took 6 months and felt very chaotic. I have rejected multiple interns under the assumption that the second round of talks would only be a formality and concluded quickly. The reasons for rejecting me in the end were that I would be to Senior for the position and that Patagonia would not be able to offer fully-remote work anytime in the future. I did make very clear on multiple occassions that this was not an issue to me.
All in all, this has been a very dissapointing experience and I hope that Patagonia will have their hiring process in order for future applicants. Sharing your concerns and then having those used against you did not feel safe.
