Initial phone screen with a recruiter was pleasant. However, they then gave a take home assignment that was frankly extremely disrespectful of candidate time. They claim it should take 3-5 hours but I spent about 13 hours and still didn't finish - ultimately I stopped there because it wasn't worth sinking more unpaid time. For what it's worth, while I'm not the world's best developer, I've been consistently one of the devs with the quickest turn around time on every team I've been on, so I'm definitely not a slow developer who takes longer than it should. I summarized the work to a few peers who are senior or staff FE devs, and we all agreed if we had been assigned those tasks in a work place, we'd estimate the work at 1.5 weeks minimum (and in the instructions they encouraged you to think of your own features to add to impress them...) Of course, I was rejected. The reasons given were some bugs (which I knew about but was not willing to spend additional time on, given the time investment thus far), and a bizarre criticism that I didn't do enough git commits even though the instructions in multiple places told us not to use git (I guess they wanted candidates to do commits but not pushes? But what a bizarre thing to have candidates guess and then count against them for not knowing) If you're really excited about the company, make sure you have 15-20 hours free to do this. But personally I never would have accepted the task if I had realized how long it would take, and IMO it's incredibly disrepectful that an employer asks candidates to spend that much time unpaid on something like this. There are plenty of ways to gauge a candidates technical skills without monopolizing their week without pay.
