      User Experience/Product Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 months. I interviewed at Planet (San Francisco, CA) in Apr 2016

      Interview

I had a call with the recruiter, and then a call with a lead designer. The lead designer I spoke with was excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation. After that, I was assigned to do a design test. I spent some hard hours on it (on top of my current job) and sent in the design test and waited to hear back. Immediately after turning it in, I was told by the recruiter that they were actually not hiring at the moment and for me to reach out again in a week. Weird...why would you have me go through all that trouble if you're actually not hiring anyone at this time? I was off put by the disorganization implied by that statement, but I waited nonetheless and reached out in a week. I was then told to reach out again in another week. And again. I did this 3 or 4 times until I eventually just told them that it might be better if they just contact me when they were ready. A month or so passed and I received an email. Still not ready to bring on anyone new, but just wanted to let me know to keep holding on. I applied in and had my first interview in April. I completed my design test in May. It is now September, and they still have me on the hook. Planet Labs, I'm taking myself off that hook and will be accepting an offer elsewhere. I do not appreciate having my time wasted. They never rejected me - rather, they told me they were very interested and that I should just wait a little while. The recruiter kept stringing me along week by week. I'm not sure what's happening with Planet Labs internally, but this is extremely unprofessional and there's no excuse for this. If this is how they treat their prospective employees, I have no interest in being a part of a culture like this. They (the recruiters, at least, at Planet Labs) are disorganized and have no value for other peoples' time. Take that into consideration when you apply to work at Planet Labs: they do not value your time.
