      Principal Software Engineer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at PointClickCare in Aug 2024

      Interview

I had a total of 6 interviews with PointClickCare, meeting 8 people in total. The interviewers were polite, nice, accommodating and understanding. What I learned: - The company seems to believe that putting candidates through 6 interviews is ok, as it elevates the candidate selection process - Ethnic diversity might be off as 7 out of the 8 interviewers were from the same demographic; you will know which one if you apply for their engineering roles. What they should be aware: - While interviewers are paid to be in these interviews, candidates are not. Six interviews is excessive, elitist and inconsiderate. If you need more than 3 interviews to determine suitability of a candidate, the problem is with you. - While Amazon, Meta and Google may have similar interview process, PointClickCare is not them. Keep it real, PointClickCare! - LeetCode/CoderByte/Miro/HackerRank type of interviews are for people with under 5 years of experience. They cater to either fresh graduates, individuals with little experience or people with no jobs that hammer these tests and become good at bringing them up at interview time. - Attract senior engineers by recognizing their strengths. They spend their normal activity solving real world problems, not pressed by unrealistic time constraints set by the interview format. They provide guidance and direction, use their experience to prevent problems from occurring in the first place. I bet you don’t get that from LeetCode, do you? - While 6 interviews may seem like it gives candidates an opportunity to meet and ask questions several times, it is something candidates never asked for. It only benefits an employer who can’t make up their mind, at the expense of precious time that candidates can use to pursue different opportunities. - Employers should use the benefits of something called “probation period”, especially with senior level hires. If it doesn’t work out, the company has a way out and candidates might prefer it this way instead of being treated like juniors during the interview process.
