I applied online. I was very familiar with the school through the charter school network. I felt very prepared because my current role is exactly the same. The initial interview process went fairly well. The interviewer called a few minutes late and did apologize, which I appreciated. After speaking, she offered to move me quickly to the next step which I was happy to hear. There was a bit of back and forth regarding scheduling, as I was wrapping up that final week at my current school, so I did appreciate her flexibility and understanding. The in-person interview was a different story. I arrived a few minutes early and found myself waiting to be interviewed well past the scheduled time. This was not a huge issue, as it gave me time to observe the school and how the staff interacted. However, after being greeted coldly by one of the HR managers, I could tell from the beginning this was not going to be the best experience. I was led to a team of all women. Not a single person appeared interested in anything I had to say from the start, except the initial interviewer who was, in my opinion, the most professional. At one point in the interview, one of the managers actually laughed out loud at one of the questions I had at the end of the interview. I could not believe it actually happened. I had such a passion and interest in this school and to see that this would be a toxic and catty environment quickly changed my mind. After meeting, I was sent to another room to complete a simple skills-based test utilizing excel and an email correspondence scenario resolving a logistics issue with staff. After completing this, I waited a few minutes to see if someone would walk me out of the building and no one did. This was the worst part of the interview. The school building is big and the least the interviewer could have done was walked me out and informed me of the follow-up process. The entire interview was really unprofessional, upsetting, and a really poor reflection of the school. I put time and energy into the interview and the same should be put back, even if I wasn't a fit (which is odd because my current role is the EXACT SAME) and I really wanted to work in this school. I was not surprised when I heard a few days later I was not selected. After that experience, I would not want to be. My advice is to get your HR process in order because it's terrible and a mess. Candidates deserve better than that.
