      Investment Banking Analyst Interview

      Feb 21, 2017
      Anonymous employee
      Toronto, ON
      Accepted offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at RBC (Toronto, ON) in Aug 2014

      Interview

I applied from another subsidiary of the bank, so I was considered an internal transfer, rather than a new applicant. I used the internal directory to my advantage and I was extremely tactful but persistent in contacting future team members, learning about the new job, and about my interviewers. I knew the industry I was going to cover in my new job, before going in to my first round, and made sure I could talk around anything that may be viewed as a shortcoming in my skills. My interview was more focused on fit than technical skills as I came with references and work experience from another part of the bank.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

For the fit portion of the interview, be able to speak about: 1. Your greatest failures and proudest achievements 2. Current or past investments, if any 3. Specific bullet points on your resume and expand on them 4. Your interests and future career plans Also, ask yourself if you would pass the airport test, as almost everyone I met at the junior level was relatively easy to talk to and had hobbies outside of finance For the technical skills portion of the interview: 1. Know bootstrapping M&A and accretion / dilution down cold even if not applying to the M&A group 2. Know the metrics used to measure company performance in your industry 3. Know how to explain aspects of your job to someone outside of finance to show that you know your stuff well enough to teach it, especially concepts like DCF, and market comparables

      Interview

Simple, more behavioral-based. Should definitely care more about your delivery when facing different kinds of directors. Important to perform your stock pitch and market trend ideas - they want to see you be in a place where you can sound creative.
