Submitted a resume via rackertalent.com and didn't hear anything back for a month or more. Eventually got an email from a recruiter stating a couple positions they had in mind for me. Set up a phone interview with him. It was basic things like your default ports for Linux and Windows, asked about some basic Linux commands asked about pretty basic Windows web server stuff like IIS and DNS.
After everything on the phone interview checked out, they set up an in person interview. You are emailed the address and given and application to either send back to the HR person or take it with you.
The in person interview for me lasted about 4 hours, and included 4 panels and a total of 9 people. It's not as bad as it sounds though, everyone was very nice and make you feel comfortable.
-1st panel were the tech guys, they asked me a bunch of questions to get a feel for my technical knowledge. NOTE: DO NOT LIE OR BS if you don't know, simply state that you don't know and show excitement and willingness to learn.
- 2nd panel, was a Manager from my dept and another a level 3 Linux Admin. You'll notice weird mixes like that, I guess it's something they do to really get an all around feel for you.
-3rd panel was actually a lead and another team member from the department I was applying for.
-4th panel was 3 people, 1 from email and apps (another dept) and 2 from Cloud Sites (another dept as well). They ask your usual interview question, mostly institutional , nothing too tech related. I suspect this is an attempt to fit you in another dept if your not fit for the one your applying for, actually a cool technique.
Questions: The tech panel will drill you on Windows and Linux for this position. I think I actually did pretty bad, but I was 100% honest about what I knew and the context I knew it in. They appreciate it that more than actual knowledge from what I could tell. Other than that it's your basic "have you ever" and "when was the last time you had a customer that.." etc.
Best advice I can give you is BE HONEST. DO NOT LIE. Be personable and ask questions to them when they ask you if you have any. Rackspace is really concerned with finding people that fit their culture it is almost as important if not more so than your actual skill.
