      Software Engineer Interview

      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Redfin (Seattle, WA) in Jan 2015

      Interview

I found out about Redfin because my friend from Amazon referred me. I then found my school job board posted a similar role, so I applied to that one instead. I was contacted by a recruiter to set up a first technical phone screen, which was 60 minutes long and consisted of coding questions. The interviewer was very courteous and we got along well - the questions were about implementing the Fibonacci algorithm, but recursively, iteratively, and memoized. Afterwards, I was invited to the onsite portion, which took place in Seattle. I was flown to Seattle the day before, put up in a nice hotel (Warwick), and flown out the day after. The interview itself started at 10am, and had two 45-minute interviews before lunch, which was 1.5 hours with two software developers. The first 45-minute interview was a coding question, which I got, but it may have taken me too long to code it, as we had run out of time at the end for any questions. The second interview was with a Program Manager, who was a "rock star" according to the devs I had lunch with. It was a design problem, and I quite liked the challenge of designing a front-end solution the problem. After lunch, there were two more 45-minute interviews. The first was another coding question - this time to do with string pattern matching. I struggled initially, but after I nailed down the correct pathway to solve it the implementation came quite smoothly after. The last interview was with the director of engineering. He was quite passionate about his work and what his team and him were doing, and was able to answer a lot of the "bigger picture" insights that I had questions about. The work culture seemed awesome - there was training for anyone in engineering about anything -- since they wanted everyone to be pretty well-rounded when it came to onboarding new engineers. I was pretty excited -- I hoped I was good enough. I guess I'd thought I did way better than I actually did, because I was told that while my values were well in alignment, my technical prowess was lacking. I guess technical interviews are hit-and-miss - I was definitely at least a little jetlagged when I had flown out to Seattle from the East coast.

Got to the first interview and got cut after. Just asked basic behavioral questions. Wasn't too difficult, but there were probably applicants that gave better answers. Interviewer was nice and kind.

There was a phone screening, then zoom interviews. I was asked behavioral questions, and I did well on it. There were technical rounds, and I passed, standard technical questions. Also spoke to the hiring manager for the skills and cultural fit.
