I should clarify that it wasn't really the entire process that was negative, mostly the in person interview. I applied online and was contacted to set up a phone interview for the following week. The phone interview went great, and I was able to share a lot of my background and how it would tie in to the position, and the recruiter answered several questions I had about how the position would work. At the end, she said she'd be happy to pass me on to the next stage, which was the in person interview.
I set up the interview for the following Monday, which is where my experience quickly shifted from positive to negative. The interviewer barely greeted me, didn't offer to or even give me an opportunity to shake her hand, and jumped straight into the interview the moment I sat down. I was somewhat caught off guard, since there is usually an introduction and/or some small talk to break the ice at the beginning of an interview, but I was trying to answer why I wanted to work at Redfin within 30 seconds of walking in the door. I probably rambled on a little, but I felt like I had settled down by the end of my answer and was ready to get into all the reasons I'd be a good candidate for the position. Unfortunately, I never really got that opportunity. The interviewer literally asked nothing further about me as a person, my background, any scenario based questions, or anything else that would typically come up to help them determine if you were a good fit for the job. There were just a few general questions about my availability, what areas I could cover, and within 10 minutes or less I was being asked if I had any questions for her. I came up with a few to try to keep the conversation going and hopefully trigger some follow up questions from her, but those were mostly met with short answers and a blank stare. The entire process barely lasted 15 minutes.
The recruiter was nice enough to call a few days later to let me know I didn't get the job. That didn't really bother me, since this would have just been a supplement to my small business that I do from home. I was just really turned off by the bizarre in person interview, and how unprofessional and pointless it was. I've been on a decent number of interviews in my life, and this was definitely the strangest. I don't know how they can make a determination about anyone in that kind of format, but the position I applied for and the rest in the area were all reposted twice within a week of my interview. It appears that no one else has been good enough for any of the positions either. It's unfortunate, as Redfin seems to be a really good company. They just have a very flawed hiring process, at least in my experience.
