I applied through other source. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Remitly (Seattle, WA) in Mar 2019
Interview
I was recruited for the role.
Initial video screen with the hiring manager then full loop in Seattle.
In person interview consisted of six one hour interviews (which included a surprise extra interview, making the loop 6.5 hours long)
Pros:
* Office has a pretty view
Cons:
* Their behavioral interviewing style, core values, data-driven approach and obsession with a high hiring bar and interview questions are clearly pulled (at times almost verbatim) from the Amazon playbook, but Amazon is much stronger at every single one of those things (and frankly a much more dynamic and interesting place to work).
* The level of talent and interview expertise of those I interviewed with varied dramatically. Many interviewers were clearly asking rote questions without the follow-up detail or deeper conversation that a behavioral interview should have.
* The company has no idea how they will grow further from here. They admitted they have a relatively weak brand, rising competition and little differentiation but answers to questions about what they could do next ranged from "more of the same" to "we don't know".
* When asked about problems at Remitly two of my interviewers cited lack of diversity as a continuing problem.
* Generally the weakest interviewers where the ones who had been there the longest, which was raised concern.
* Most strangely one of the interviewers actually got combative with me and accused me of false humility at one point, which was a truly bizarre experience.
* Finally, travel was arranged last minute and there were some errors requiring me to be on the phone with the airline to straighten things out before each flight. Also, no reimbursement was offered for travel to/from the airports, which is pretty standard stuff for companies of their scale. So factor in the cost of travel and food if you are thinking about flying out for an in-person loop (for me, several hundred dollars).
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Q: Pretend you've been tasked with building a website to allow US citizens to vote online in the next election. What do you do?
Q: What are three A/B experiments you would run on our landing page?
Q: What are the ideal traits in a PM? How would you rate yourself on those traits?
Q: What would your past teammates say were your weaknesses?
Q: Tell me about a big feature you led from beginning to end. What were the challenges?
Q: Tell me about a big failure you had. What happened and what did you do?
It took Remitly more than a month to book the first round, and during this time, three interviewers were replaced by the hiring team due to availability and other logistical reasons. I was asked to provide my availability 5 times. On the interview day, my interviewer arrived a few minutes late. However, the interviewer didn't apologize. The hiring team claimed that its interview process is similar to Amazon's, but the art of asking relevant follow-up questions and providing actionable feedback is not as polished as Amazon's.
The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Remitly (Seattle, WA) in Apr 2025
Interview
Very clear process, HR and recruiter were helpful i providing the guideline of what each interview in the loop will look like. I didnt feel like I wasnt prepared for the questions asked. The team was very nice and supportive and interviews felt like conversations.
Interview questions [3]
Question 1
How did you deal with difficult team mates or stakeholders?
Remitly employs a situational interview process that emphasizes assessing your current experience and aligning it with the role and the company’s culture. The interviewers come from various functions, including some you may not work with directly. Each discussion typically lasts an hour and is highly interactive, diving deep into specific scenarios. This requires a thorough understanding of your domain, as superficial knowledge won’t suffice. However, the interviewers create a supportive environment, giving you ample time and guidance to articulate your responses effectively. Overall, it’s a well-rounded evaluation that explores multiple facets of your candidacy, making for an engaging and insightful experience.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
As I was interviewing for a product management role, the interviews delved into the specifics of how I collaborate with business and engineering teams. The discussions included scenarios on roadmap prioritization, managing trade-offs in product decisions, and the logic or frameworks I use to guide these decisions.
