I had to wait for 13 minutes before the interviewer joined the call, and this was only after I had to email the internal recruiter and let you know that no one had joined. There was no apology for the lateness, and no suggestion to extend the interview by 15 minutes to align with the initial 30 minute allocation. During the Interview, it was clear that the interviewer was not interested in getting to know me based on their tone/ attitude and I felt like they were trying to rush the call. As a black female, I felt very disheartened by this approach, and I knew immediately that I was not going to be taken seriously for this position for whatever reason that may be.
I believe I answered all questions comprehensively using the STAR model, and clearly articulated how my skills and experience very much aligned to the role being advertised. However, the limited questions that were asked did not give the interviewer a chance to really get to know me and my relevant experience. In addition, when I was given the opportunity to ask questions, all the interviewer’s responses were short and there was minimal effort to engage in an interactive conversation. I strongly believe that the interviewer had already made their mind up before the interview even began.
Every individual irrespective of their background has the right to have a fair interview. This kind of inappropriate behaviour by senior professionals is totally unacceptable and reflects negatively on their company.
