It seems like most people who get through the screening process will also get an interview. I had a phone interview with the Principle Scientist for that department (?) and he asked pretty standard interview questions and also some biochemistry problems too. At the end, he told me that I should write cover letters and that he's "read some strong cover letters" which gave me a pretty good indication right then that I would not be getting an offer.
