I appreciate that it can be frustrating to be given a relatively challenging task as a take home project, especially in a job market where developers are so in demand that employers aren't even doing reference checks. It must seem onerous.
From our perspective, a take-home test is the best way for us to evaluate the technical competency of an applicant while controlling for all the difficulties that come from an interview environment. By doing the test as a take-home, we allow people time to do their research, be comfortable, and not feel like they are being put on the spot. It allows applicants to put their best work forward.
We're always trying to improve how we do our hiring, and we have considered that perhaps our take-home test is a little bit _too_ demanding. We'll take this feedback to heart and see if we can't improve on the experience for future applicants.
