I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Safeway (San Francisco, CA) in Mar 2015
Interview
Store manager and manager in training both there, very nice, friendly. Short process, asked my availability and why I wanted to work for Safeway, we talked about hours per week available to work, job mobility, general stuff. They had me do a drug test in the office right then and there, a swab you hold in your mouth/cheek for three minutes then test, which I passed. Then they said they do a background check which could take up to two weeks, and I am still waiting to hear back, and it has been exactly one week now.

I submitted an application in store and got called in to do an in person interview. The manager was super easy to talk to and had been with the store a long time.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Why do you want to work in the deli versus other departments?
It was very informative and I felt comfortable with the knowledge that my interview would be considered with the utmost thought. I did not land the position, but have no ill will, they were right in the deli did not suit me. A barista position was far more paletteable
pretty easy and straightforward tho didn't get the job. probably shouldve done more prep. didn't have much experience with deli work which may have been why i didn't get the job but oh well
