After submitting my application, I was given an assignment by the Head of Product Manager SJ directly through LinkedIn.
I was told to create a spec about a new or existing feature in a game in the document and was encouraged to ask any questions that I had.
Two things occurred that leads me to leave a negative overall interview experience:
1. I asked a question asking for clarification about the assignment. I came in applying from a different industry and was seeing conflicting content and blog posts about what a spec should entail. I got no response to my question.
2. I ended up submitting a presentation about an existing feature which was one of the potential paths I could take. I didn't hear back after 3 business days and sent a follow-up message directly to JS. Within a few hours, I was given a message from Second Dinner stating that "I was supposed to create a spec about a new feature"
While my presentation probably didn't fit all the details needed for a spec, the assignment document did state it could be an existing or new feature. I also did try to ask for feedback and recommendations as well.
I can't help but feel that a candidate was already decided and that my application was an afterthought.
With how many people applied and how quickly Second Dinner is growing, it may have been better to have more than one individual respond to messages and answer any questions.
Regardless, I'm still very excited about what games Second Dinner will release and only wish the team the best moving forward and will be on the lookout for any future opportunities.
