My intent in posting this is to act as a resource for future candidates interested in a position at Shopify as, at the time I was interviewing, there did not seem to be much discussion of the sales interviews here on Glassdoor. About one week after applying through an employee referral I received an email from the recruiter asking me to book a 15 minute time slot for a phone interview. The phone interview seemed pretty typical in that they simply wanted to gauge your interest in the company and the position as well as quickly learn a bit about the person applying. I was given a chance to ask a few questions at the end of the phone screen and I highly suggest you prepare 2 or 3 questions about the company that demonstrate that you've done your homework. The day after the phone interview I received a follow up email in order to book a time for an in-person interview with the recruiter during a weekday morning. We met at the Kitchener office where I was given a quick tour of the building, offered snacks and refreshments, and then taken into one of their free spaces for the classic Shopify "tell me your life story" interview. This interview lasted about an hour, during which we discussed where I grew up, my high school, my University experience and then moved on to current experiences. Near the end I seized the opportunity to ask some more questions about the sales funnel at Shopify and the general buyer's journey. Note: I was given the choice of meeting in either the Kitchener or Toronto offices. A little less than a week after the in-person interview with the recruiter I was contacted through email again to set up a time to meet with one of the Managers. This interview occurred the week after, again in the Kitchener office, and consisted of much of the same content as the first interview, though we sort of glossed much of the early life experiences and focused more on University/recent experiences. This time around, the interview lasted about 45 minutes. I was told I could expect a decision on next steps within a few days and that the next step would be to meet with the other Manager. From what I've heard, the sales interviews generally last 3 rounds then an offer is made. Over a week later, after radio silence and a follow-up on my end, I was contacted by phone by the recruiter to give me the unfortunate news that they had decided to go with other candidates. I'm torn: on one hand the interviews were quite relaxed and I was treated very well and courteously. It was very interesting to be able to see the current office and to have the chance to speak with a few of the employees there while I waited for my interviews. The conversations we had were fun and insightful, though almost too informal. I was told straight up that they hadn't reviewed my resume, which signals to me that they also hadn't read my cover letter (why did I make one of those, again?). On the other hand, I'm sort of bitter I spent a month preparing for these interviews and doing (what I think is) a great job on them, then ending up with nothing to show for it. You'll see when you read through other Glassdoor interviews that this seems to be typical in the Shopify interview process across all areas of the business. But, in the end it is what it is and by posting this I'm hoping you (yes, YOU) can succeed where I've failed. Good luck, kids.
