Got referred by a former colleague who had moved to Shopify. The process kicked off with a recruiter screen, followed by a technical phone interview where I was asked about designing a search autocomplete ML system. Things got intense during the coding round — mid-way through, I realized I had tackled a similar problem on PracHub while prepping. For the final round, I discussed a fraud detection model for transactions. While I got an offer, I ultimately decided to decline as I accepted another opportunity. Overall, it was a challenging yet insightful experience.

Interview
My recent experience with the initial interview stage at Shopify left me disappointed. The call started 8 minutes late, and the conversation felt rushed and disorganized. Some of the early questions seemed only loosely related to the role, while others focused more on my current company than on my qualifications or fit for Shopify. There was a strong emphasis on company trivia (e.g. number of employees at shopify!! When shopify started?), which felt out of place for an initial screen. The tone of the interview came across as transactional and somewhat dismissive, which made the whole experience feel less like a meaningful discussion and more like a checkbox exercise. Overall, it was not a positive or engaging experience.
