      Customer Service Representative Interview

      Sep 15, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Boston, MA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at SimpliSafe (Boston, MA) in Sep 2017

      Interview

I would describe the process as soft, open-ended, and indirect. After a thirty-minute information session, I was invited to return the following week for five full days of an "interview". I participated in a group of eight people on Monday; six returned on Tuesday; three persons were dismissed on Friday morning and three were offered employment. Four different "trainers" worked with our group during the first half of the day, or less than half a day. During the second half of the day or more than one-half, group members dispersed and shadowed active representatives on the call-center floor, gradually receiving opportunities to take calls while being coached by representatives. At the risk of over-simplification, I would say that the morning training was poorly coordinated but spontaneously helpful in questions and answers; printed literature had to be scouted out by team members, and intranet resources were only available during group conversation times. The security equipment was discussed, but no live simulations were offered, and demonstrations were piecemeal at best. The shadowing component was quite informative and enjoyable, and suggested that most of the employee's energy would be devoted to handling a few commonly recurring problems that involve wireless coverage and power outages. The full range of scenarios for customer support were not taught or modeled, either in groups or in shadowing/taking calls. The "decision" process probably consisted of a team of trainers coming to some sort of an agreement as to who would fit the role and blend with a team of representatives. However this is hardly more than a conjecture, given that I was asked to take a seat in a conference room while a trainer briefly reviewed the core expectations for the week (such as attendance, participation, and shadowing/taking calls). A one sentence statement claiming a lack of retention on my part quickly lead to a handshake and a humorless escort to the exit elevator, suggesting that the trainers shed their friendly and encouraging demeanor once they figured that they had no particular use for our services. The entire week was informal, open-ended, and insulting in the end.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

In fact there were no hard-and-fast interview questions. There were four daily writing exercises, rather broad open-response prompts and questions. How did you respond when facing criticism from a fellow employee? When you lack understanding on a topic, how do proceed, who do you ask, how do gather information? Describe a time that you missed a deadline; what did you learn from the experience?

      Interview

Three years ago, I interviewed at SimpliSafe, and it’s still THEE most uncomfortable interview experiences I’ve ever had. The interviewer *tried* to take an intimidating approach, and many of her questions felt like traps rather than genuine conversations. She showed me a product description and asked if I thought it sounded good. I answered honestly and said yes, but she reacted negatively and huffed and puffed and said 'you're not going to hurt my feelings, just look harder'. When I said I could improve the wording, she demanded specifics on the spot, but with such an attitude. The entire interaction felt tense and unprofessional. She seemed VERY disengaged and uninterested in being there. I never received a follow-up — just SIMPLI GHOSTED
