      Flight Test Operator Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Skydio in Jul 2024

      Interview

I applied for a "Flight Test Operator -- Hardware Validation" position. It may also be known as "Flight Test Engineer" as that's the next level up. I had an interview with recruiter, then got scheduled the next day for a technical interview. Passed the 2nd interview, and got scheduled again soon after for a 3rd interview (also technical). The interview seemed to be going fine (I was wrong) as the interviewer left a lot of time for questions and answered them very candidly. They also told me about the final round of interviews which happens on-site, and involves a project and presentation. I was looking forward to it. Based on the interviews, this job sounded like one I will love doing every day. After the interview, there was a week of silence, and then I was rejected. Nevertheless, the questions were great. And I had heard great things about Skydio, and how they're very organized. All in all, I did not know what to expect or how to prepare for the technical interviews as it was my first time interviewing for this industry. This review is partly my way to "pay it forward" to others who are in the same position. The first of two technical interviews was about flight dynamics, how drones work and self-stabilize, and how to test drones prototypes for specific criteria like their GPS unit or their high-altitude readyness. The second technical interview was about debugging hypothetical drone issues -- with some questions leaning more towards the software side. I was asked why a camera feed is displaying incorrectly, why might a battery read as too low after the drone landed with a higher battery percentage, and how to resolve controls input lag when the drone is performing obstacle avoidance. I thought I was doing decently well, but apparently the interviewer thought otherwise and switched to letting me ask questions for the remainder of the interview. I found the first interview difficult, but felt I did decently well. The second one felt easier, so perhaps that was because I was too close minded, or didn't know the interviewer was looking for more discussion, or a deeper level of communication. Just my guesses.

      Interview questions [6]

      Question 1

How does a drone move, how does it keep altitude, what kind of sensors do drones have, how are commands sent to drone and translated into motor actuation.
      Answer question

      Question 2

What happens when flying at high altitude? what's the affect on the battery? What changes about flight dynamics?
      Answer question

      Question 3

How to test if a drone can handle high-altitude flights?
      Answer question

      Question 4

How to design tests to compare different prototypes that differ in their GPS module?
      Answer question

      Question 5

If a drone flew find yesterday, but after a software push, only one propeller is spinning, how do you debug it if you have access to latest software changes?
      Answer question

      Question 6

If a drone is flying through series of waypoints and it's reporting correct telemetry about its position, but the live video stream from the drone seems to be coming from 10 feet to the left of each waypoint, what could be happening?
