      I interviewed at Sonar

      Interview

I did two exercises on a judge website (I've got 100%), another technical interview via video conference (I've also found and coded the optimal solution in the given two exercises) and a final interview in the Geneva office. This last one is incremental in difficulty. I also did well on that. I'm confident I've got nearly 100% on the technical. Then, came the HR interview. The person who interviewed me was new in the company, with the supervisor watching through video conference without participating. Questions were focused on problems and conflicts in your life. I was interrupted a few times while replying and the session felt like a police interrogatory. There was no empathy (I tried hard...). The interviewer was harsh, and looks like it was trying to prove I'm not a good candidate instead of seeing who I am. Which puts you in a constantly defensive position. It was intimidating. Positive examples, experiences or conflict resolution were seldom the point and little time was spent on that. The interviewer has not read my CV. I have dedicated a good amount of time preparing myself for this interview. Not only the technical, which consumed a lot of time, but also reading everything I could about it. There's a lot on the website of the company, there are documents that you can download as a candidate. Not to mention the www and Glasdoor. I even tested their product and followed their Twitter. I asked questions to the interviewers. So I cannot accept when the company doesn't read a candidate's CV. Telling my country of origin was like dropping a bomb, I certainly didn't expect this response. It wasn't supposed to be a surprise neither, it was written in the second line of my CV. The result was negative under "lack of motivation", which by what one can read here is definitely not the case. They mentioned that all technical was disregarded (and they were unaware of my performance). I suggested that they could observe instead the technical interviews, and see how the candidate interacts with the employees, in a real (and stressful) situation. A more realistic scenario rather than what they are trying to infer. I felt I haven't got the full respect that I deserve. In 15 years of professional experience, going through many interviews (both as candidate and interviewer), in many countries, I've never experienced this setting. Also, I was very often referred to as friendly, helpful to team mates and even complimented by a manager for motivating my colleagues (unintended). Even if you have reasons to decline a candidate, which the candidate doesn't have to agree with, you have to respect the person you're interviewing. If you don't like a candidate, you don't need to scrutinize or invent reasons.

Why? (after I mentioned it was challenging to work with unmotivated colleagues).

      Software Engineer Interview

      Aug 8, 2025
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Sonar in Jul 2025

      Interview

HR call, then online assessment on Codility (two easy-medium leetcode-style problems, to be solved in 1h+). Then 45-min live coding of an easy problem and some questions about design patterns. Then 3h live-coding, in 3 sprints, implementing a CSV parser. The problem was easy, the focus was on clean-code, SOLID principles, making everything as configurable as possible. Then a 30-min cross-functional interview with a personal from another team, asking about my experience and how I would handle different situations. Then, 20 min discussion with the CIO, Andrea Malagodi. I was rejected after this round. His general tone was pretty arrogant overall, I felt it after the first seconds. After I told him at my current job we come 1 day per week to the office, he sneered and told me at Sonar the policy is 3 day/week, and he recommends employers to come even 5. I should have asked him why, but was too nervous to think of anything. I also told him I wanted to switch jobs because I felt I have plateaued at my current company, to which he replied "you were only for 2 years at your current employer". Then came the rejection email, that simply said that there was not enough "alignment" between me and the role, which is very vague, also considering that the previous feedback after each of the previous rounds was detailed and positive.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Sonar (Singapore) in Apr 2025

      Interview

I went through first 2 rounds of interviews. However, after the second round, I received an email informing me that the position had been closed due to a sudden change in the hiring budget. This was surprising and disappointing, especially after investing time and preparation into the process.
