I connected with Sonder through Vettery.com and scheduled a ~30min phone call with the VP of Engineering. He gave background on himself, described the mission of the company, discussed what problems they'll be tackling in the near future, and gave me the lay of the land of the engineering organization. The rest of the process moved quite quickly, and Sonder was accommodating to my schedule. The next day I had a 1hr technical phone screen via video chat with a Sonder engineer using CoderPad. The exercise focused on modeling clean, maintainable code, and left time at the end for broader discussion. I flew to San Francisco the following week for a full-day onsite interview. The recruiting team sent an agenda for the day ahead of time, including a prompt for the coding session. The prompt suggested spending 30-60min thinking about how to model an application relevant to Sonder's business, with certain requirements and constraints. The onsite sessions included: - an office tour - an in-depth technical overview of Sonder - the aforementioned coding exercise - a system design interview - a chat with the Director of Engineering with some system design questions included - a culture interview wherein we discussed all of my previous roles in detail During the coding session, we spent a good deal of time vetting my proposed modeling and adapting it to changing requirements. While I had considered the prompt ahead of time (for longer than the suggested timeframe), I did not finish 100% of the coding portion of the exercise, but I attribute that partially to my choice to forego an ORM. A couple days after the onsite, I had a follow up chat with the CEO. We discussed my background at a high level, as well as big picture questions about the company--more business than tech. Overall I had an extremely positive experience. The onsite interview process was extensive (be ready for a full day), but every session was relevant to the kind of work I would be doing or to the cultural components of life at Sonder. I felt well prepared on what to expect of each session beforehand, and my interviewers communicated clearly as we stepped through problems together (no curveballs or overly vague questions). All in all it was a thorough but enjoyable process with a friendly and competent team.
