I applied online and received an invitation to do a phone interview about two weeks later. The phone interview lasted almost an hour with the General Manager. At the end of the interview he said he would like me to have a second interview with someone in HR to continue in the process. I had the interview with her a week later and she asked me some of the same questions, while delving into my previous experience and how it would relate to this position. I was then told that I had made it to the Sonder Challenge level, which is an extensive test that they provide you with 24 hours to complete, from the time they send it to you. I ended up receiving extra time due to receiving it a little late, which I very much appreciated. This took quite a bit of time and they were nice enough to coordinate it for a day that I was off so that I could focus on it. It had three parts to it. The first part was primarily situational questions and testing how you would handle various scenarios that you may encounter in this position. It also asked to define a few things, such as exceptional hospitality and such. The second part involved more of how you would run the operation along with accounting for various costs. It involved preparing a few different charts and weighing the pros and cons of various parts of the operation. The third part was creating a presentation about something that you are passionate about and giving you the option to film yourself presenting it, which I did. My challenge came out to be about 22 pages worth of typing up answers, so it definitely is time consuming to say the least, but I found it very interesting and enjoyed it. I then waited a few weeks before I was informed that my challenge had been reviewed and was invited to meet with the GM in person. I enjoyed meeting with him a lot as we were able to talk more about other things and feel out one another's vibe. It was definitely more of a personality interview to see if we would get along, which I believe to be very beneficial. I also appreciated that he was very transparent and let me know that while they had started with 78 applications, I had been selected as one of the final four. I was the least experienced of the four in regards to time in a management position, but he acknowledged that I also had some strengths the others did not have. He let me know if I had not heard back from him by the end of the year to reach out to him for an update, which I did, only to hear the decision hadn't been made quite yet. I reached out again about a week ago (beginning of February) and was informed that he had selected another candidate, but that he appreciated my time and patience explaining I did have a lot to offer and that he would reach back out to me if there were any other opportunities down the road. The GM was great and very professional and made learning about Sonder very interesting. My only con (besides not being offered the position) was that the process was dragged out over a three+ month process. I believe the reason for this was due to them building the operation from scratch here, but just a very long overall process. It definitely seems like an incredibly innovative company to work for, just keep in mind that if you are looking to find a job immediately, this process does take time.
