      General Manager Interview

      Sep 28, 2019
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Spin

      Interview

Spin is hoping to land a former strategy consultant as its new GM, and, like most other startups, I suspect they'll fail to make such a hire. I applied through their website and received a request to schedule an interview. I then provided my availability, and the recruiter (external) insisted my availability wasn't not soon enough. I was then promised that our call would take "just take five minutes." Just five minutes? I assumed then the recruiter had a small number of very pointed questions to ask, so I suggested I answer them via email since I was about to jump on a flight back to the US from a client site in Australia. After all, the recruiter needed a response urgently. I was wrong, and I was mislead. I received by email a typical battery of screening questions. It would not have been possible to address these questions by phone in just five minutes, as promised. So I bulleted a few responses and noted the questions they asked were unusual for the background they sought. (If you're asking for a former strategy consultant from a top-tier consulting firm, why ask them whether they're analytical?) Finally, the compensation was a pittance. "We're generous with equity." Really? Because the last I checked, employees had to BUY those options and you refused to share information about the cap table. I'm sure folks are grateful for the "generous" opportunity to invest in your company they can't afford to make on your pittance of a base salary.

      Question 1

We're looking for a strategy consultant because they're notoriously analytical. Are you, a former strategy consultant, analytical?

      Application

      Interview

Recruiter reached out to set up an interview, agreed on a time and she would call me. She didn't call me, and ignored my email to see if she needed to reschedule. Never heard back from her. I reached out to a recruiting director on LinkedIn to let her know this was happening and she never responded either.
