I was invited to interview for a Business Change Manager position at Spiral Sarco. Unfortunately, my experience was very negative and I feel it is important to share this for the benefit of others.
The interview began with the standard request to introduce myself. However, before I could properly respond, the Change Lead interrupted to say she had already looked at my LinkedIn profile and, because I run my own consultancy, she did not believe I would be committed to the role. She repeated this point several times, citing the role’s requirement for long and unpredictable hours, and did not allow me to explain my motivations for applying, how I would prioritise the position, or even whether I intended to continue with the consultancy. This was puzzling, as my CV (used to apply for the role) also makes clear that I operate a limited company, so this was already known before the interview.
The interview was then ended abruptly by the Change Lead after this first “introduce yourself” question. As a result, I was not able to demonstrate my skills or experience. The second person present (an analyst from her team) appeared uncomfortable, and afterwards the recruitment consultant apologised for what they described as unprofessional behaviour.
While every company has the right to set its own hiring criteria, I found the conduct of this interview dismissive and unorthodox. Candidates should reasonably expect to be given the chance to explain their background and interest in a role, rather than being cut off at the outset.
