Thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding your interview experience for this position. Discussions regarding salary can be tricky. Many candidates that we interview may currently be working in larger cities or places with a higher cost of living. At St. Jude we work to keep our salaries competitive so that we attract top talent, but we also need to be responsible with donor dollars and take into account the fact that cost of living is low in Memphis, TN. Often our candidates want to determine if the opportunity fits their salary needs, and the Recruiter/Hiring Manager is trying to figure out if the candidate will even consider taking the job due to salary. Our positions are above fairly paid in the market, but sometimes what we offer is less than what a candidate makes elsewhere (often, as we said, this is for candidates who come from areas with a higher cost of living). Hiring Managers try to navigate this situation carefully. They will sometimes not reveal the pay range because they don’t want to drive away someone who may be a good fit for the position. In general, it is good practice to determine if someone is good for a position before discussing the money. We are sorry that you felt uncomfortable in your interview and that you felt the conversation took a rude turn when you were discussing salary. The Department Director and Chair have been made aware of this review and are working to make improvements in how these discussions are handled going forward. Thank you again for your review and we wish you the best in your job search.
