      Barista Interview

      Aug 13, 2011
      Anonymous employee
      Houston, TX
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Starbucks (Houston, TX) in Aug 2011

      Interview

I started as I assume every prospective employee does by applying through Starbucks' online application. It's a standard app with a lengthy personality test. After about 5 days I received a call from one of my secondary location choices but I was happy as all the stores are close to where i live. I was called on a monday and the manager asked If could interview wednesday so I accepted and began to read a little on glassdoor to prepare for my interview. As far as dress for the interview I decided to dress better than jeans and a collared shirt like a few others have said. I wore black slacks, a white button down dress shirt, and a nice tie. I would always recommend overdressing for an interview, you can never look too nice but you can definitely look bad. First impressions are very important! I showed up about 15 minutes early for my 12pm interview and waited in line to ask the cashier to let the manager know I had arrived for my interview. The cashier told what I assume was a lead barista to let the manager know and he offered me a complimentary drink. You should accept the drink but I really didn't feel it was any kind of a test. He told me I could sit anywhere so I did as I waited and prepared my Triple Venti White Mocha. The manager finally came out about 10 minutes after my 12pm interview time and greeted me. I stood up introduced my self and we made our way to a table setup for our interview. She asked me several times if my drink was good, what I ordered, and If i added anything to it. The interview was pretty standard but lasted a good 30 minutes. some questions that were asked were: "Why do you want to work for starbucks?" "Describe a time when you gave bad customer service, & how did you resolve the situation?" "Describe a time when you gave exceptional customer service?" "What will you bring to the table if hired?" She asked about every job that I had on my resume, why I left each job, & what I liked about each job. The manager was very friendly and towards the end of the interview decided to warn me that working at Starbucks is not easy but that it can be rewarding and that there is opportunity for advancement. We also discussed pay which in this particular store starting pay for a Barista is 8.00/Hr plus tips. When we were done she asked me If I had any questions, I asked her 2 questions: "What are the daily operations for a barista" "What do you like about working at Starbucks?" After her lengthy responses, I asked her when I could expect a call. She told me she had a few more interviews but that I would definitely get a call before 5pm on friday if not today. She asked me again If I enjoyed my drink, of course I said yes and thanked her again for the interview and the drink.
