      Independent Agent Interview

      Mar 20, 2014
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      Declined offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at State Farm (New York, NY) in Feb 2014

      Interview

First, I had to pass a brief phone screen with the recruiter. Then, I had to pass a behavioral analysis test which I was told only 40% pass. They give you a password and access to a portal to view information on the company. No one "sold" me on the experience it was a bunch of online videos and powerpoint slides which took a few hours to review. The next step was to have a panel interview with two people. Prior to the interview I was given a sheet with Agent Competency Skills which include: Entreprenurial Spirit, Leadership Courage, Passion, Results Oriented, Relationship Building, Influence, Integrity, Teamwork, Competitiveness, Communication). The night before I was told to review them and I will be asked 9 questions that are looking to identify that I possess those skills. "What are the three qualities most important for customer relationships?" When I began answering a question on "How do overcome objection handling? Give me an example" I gave them an example about common objections that I get in my current role and I how I respond to them. After I answered a gentleman (I use that word loosely here) said that I was too general. So I asked "Do you want me to give names of companies? I don't think I understand what you are looking for" and I went to ask another question "Do you...." and I got abruptly cut off and he actually said in a stern voice practically yelling, "Listen, Jennifer listen to my answer! You are not being specific" Apparently they want you to answer the question as if you are relaying the entire story to your boss on a situation. The next question was "What are three qualities that are most important in customer relationships". Needless to say, totally unimpressed with the questions and the entire process. Didn't ask anything relevant about my work experience except how I was rewarded for certain achievements and did I like to be recognized professionally(not sure if that was the actual way it was phrased). I don't like rude people and he was rude. The next step would be a business proposal and that's when I decided to back out because it wasn't worth my investment nor energy in working with the company. I spoke to many agents to get their feedback and most of them were not making much money in the first 3 years. After further investigation, I realized that I would have to take out a loan to cover expenses and after I did their project simulator to determine what I would net, I realized I would not make ANY money the first year. I have everything to risk and I don't want to take a risk with rude management that I have no interest in working for. They seemed to forget the interview goes both ways!! I didn't choose you State Farm because of your ridiculous process and rude management. I have never even had a boss talk to me in that manner in my 20 years of work history. Applicants beware!! Do your homework and look at the competition. I am now working with Allstate and they were fabulous to work with. They got to know me and not just go down their list to check off that I answered a question exactly right. Also, I see the immediate return on investment with Allstate. I have had a wonderful experience with Allstate so far. I would definitely recommend reaching out to them if you are serious in becoming an independent agent.
