Interview
Completely remote interview process, due to COVID-19 shelter in place orders. From start to finish, the process lasted 6 weeks.
1. Recruiting call to understand the role(s), understand my background. (Week 1)
2. VC with product design manager, talking through background and a specific portfolio project. (Week 2)
3. VC with product designer to work through a collaborative exercise. (Week 3)
4. Prep for final round with design exercise, the expectation being 4 hours of time spent with about 10 minutes of the last piece of the presentation devoted to this work. I spent about 1.5 hours on the "designs", and 2.5 on building the presentation aspect. I felt it was reasonable given the prompt.
5. Final round: portfolio presentation (1 hour), followed by a series of 5 1:1 or 2:1 sessions with designers and PM. One of those was an informal "coffee chat" with two designers, where the focus was to provide space for me to ask questions. (Week 4)

What is an area that you are currently working on in order to grow or improve?
Complete waste of time. The interview process is seven steps long. It includes a portfolio review, an app critique, a whiteboarding session, and several conversational interviews. All of these require preparation ahead of time, so if you already have a job or a family, or anything else going on in your life other than work, good luck.
If that wasn't concerning enough, there is zero diversity here. In a company of thousands, that is not an accident.
Overall, the recruiting process was excellent. The recruiter was communicative, respectful, and empathetic throughout, making the experience feel transparent and candidate-friendly.
One area for improvement would be the Case Study Review (third round). For my interview the one person who showed up was from the Design Systems team, and seemed a bit checked out, also quite unenthusiastic about Stripe and his own role in general.
For product design roles, it would be beneficial if 2 interviewers conducted it rather than just 1. Also, that at least one interviewer came directly from the hiring team or product area. This could help ensure the discussion and evaluation are aligned with the product thinking, complexity, and problem-solving skills emphasized by the role and hiring manager—such as 0→1 product development or productizing existing capabilities—while a second designer from the broader design organization assesses design craft and process. I believe this would provide a more balanced evaluation of both role-specific and design org/culture fit.
