      Software Engineer Interview

      Mar 18, 2022
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Stripe (New York, NY) in Mar 2022

      Interview

Not a great experience. The interviewer showed up five minutes late, fresh out of bed, and possibly hung over. He told me he had a hockey game the night before and didn't know he had an interview that day as he wiped his eyes. It was 10am his time. The interview was pretty simple to be honest. I think I failed it because I didn't use TDD. But at the end, I asked the interviewer if he had any feedback for me and he said the interview went great. I left feeling like I would be moved on to the next round because I did solve the challenge, and due to the unprofessionalism that the interviewer showed. As a side note, one of my questions to the interviewer was how did he like working at Stripe, and his answer was that in his two years working there he had, and this is no exaggeration, 10 managers. He talked about how difficult working with the local environment was, and how nothing is documented. This was his whole answer, he literally said nothing good about the company. I thanked him for his transparency, but I wanted to move on and see for myself because he didn't seem like a great employee. Like I said, the interviewer said that the interview went great. However, I received an email from the recruiter stating that I had not made it to the next round. Surprised, I asked if there was any actionable feedback I could use to do better next time. I never heard back. I'm not a big review writer, but this one was irritatingly unprofessional and disrespectful to my time. It's unfortunate, because the company seems like one of the great ones from the outside looking in. Hopefully, this was just one bad experience.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Basically write a function that takes a string, and an array of strings and tells you if that string is in the array. Not quite that easy, but that's the general gist of it.

      Interview

First an OA which is very hard, you have to be really fast. Then HR call and then phone round. Unfortunately I got unlucky and my interviewer was doing something else while doing the interview, he was muted and I had to ask for his attention twice. Of course in the end he said I did very well and one day later I was rejected. The phone round is not particularly difficult but you have to be fast and talking too much will cost you.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They have a bunch of questions about string parsing, more often than not you will need to read a CSV so know how to do that, and know how to use the split function.

      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Stripe in Jul 2026

      Interview

started with a quick recruiter chat (checking developer infrastructure know-how), followed by a 45-min live coding screen where they look for production ready code. onsite was 5 rounds: coding, bug bash, integration, system design, and behavioral. bug bash was the most interesting part. they just drop you into a random repo with failing tests and watch how you track down the root cause. integration is pure API work - reading docs and wiring things up, but they lean heavy on error handling. sys design felt very grounded. instead of drawing huge scalable architecture, we basically just talked through failure modes and backward compatibility.behavioral was standard. across the board, stripe cares way more about readable code and communication than tricky algorithms.for prep, practice reading other people's code and fixing bugs. i had a mock on prepfully with a stripe SWE to test my bug bash process, and it really highlighted some messy debugging habits i had. tough loop, but it actually feels like real engineering.

      Question 1

Given a stream of Stripe checkout session events, identify sessions abandoned at each step of the checkout flow and calculate conversion rates
