I had a call with the recruiter and hiring manager.
The recruiter started the call by explaining for 10 minutes that the salary range they posted online has changed and is actually lower than they originally posted. She said they only pay out at the lower end of the salary range which would be $145k, while the online posting said the range was about $150k-180k. She said something about how everyone starts off at the lower end of the range, and they don't negotiate at all, so you can either take it or leave it, and she wanted to make sure I was ok with that.
It was already a red flag that she started the conversation this way and it took a full 10 minutes to explain why they lowered the salary range for this role. I just looked at the job posting again and they have now lowered it even further to $107,500 - $161,300 which is crazy. They have lowered the ranges at least 3 times for this role. This is for a manager level role, which since I'm interviewing at other companies, is usually at $150k-$210k, so Stripe is definitely low balling. Their other manager roles seem similarly low in range. Not to mention that the stock they offer you is miniscule at around $40-50k. Note, this is the total grant over 4 years, so that translates to about $12K per year.
I know Stripe has been a hot company in the media for a while, but at the size and maturity they're at, the stock has already appreciated a bunch and it's not going to appreciate that much more before they IPO sometime next year (if all goes well).
So overall, the package seems very stingy and their behavior indicates there may have some internally. I didn't make it past the hiring manager even though the interview went well, maybe because I didn't seem very comfortable with the financial package. In either case, the recruiter didn't even have the decency to give me an update, even after I sent her a couple of follow up emails. Overall, a terrible interview experience. I would not work for a company that thinks it's ok to treat applicants this way.
