I got approached by an external recruiter who was recruiting for this position in Amsterdam. The position sounded interesting and even though I do live abroad now, I wanted to move back to the Netherlands. Obviously I was interested in getting to know them better. The recruiter was friendly and professional organising the entire process, kept me updated.
The interviews also went very well and smoothly, I went from one stage to another and to the final one. Since I'm not based in Amsterdam and SuitSupply wanted to have the last round with me, we agreed that I will fly to Amsterdam and visit them. At the same time I already had another pending job offer from a very well rated Dutch company and wanted to make my mind up faster.
SuitSupply said that's fine, no problem, please send us the tickets you want to book, we'll do that for you and you'll receive them in your inbox soon. So I did and kept waiting... First they said to me it will take half a day, then tomorrow, then again tomorrow. As the flight date was approaching and I was left without answers, I asked again what to expect. The external recruiter called me then and gave an explanation that tickets need to be booked via another agency and therefore the process lasts takes so long, also somebody there got sick. She was sorry and told me that the days we agreed upon won't work, and I should send her new dates for the upcoming week. I was a bit annoyed since my time was already planned accordingly and I took time off at my current company in order to have this interview with Suit Supply. But she assured me the new dates will certainly work because the sick person will be back to work next morning and book my tickets first thing in the morning. Okay, I sent my other possible dates to her. Got no answer for 2 more days. Again left waiting and not sure how to plan my own time, plus what to do with another pending offer.
Finally I got called back and she apologised that tickets won't be booked again because they have few other candidates and Suit Supply also wants to talk to all of us to see us all "in the final stage" before making their decision. But Suit Supply asked me to wait again and keep my other offer pending as long as possible because "they are very keen on me". It means that they were not even trying to book my tickets and the sick employee story was just a made up story to cover their indecisiveness.
I didn't mind not flying there, honestly I myself could have the last round via Zoom/Teams/whatever. I don't mind changes either, they do happen. I don't mind hearing 'no, there's no match between you and us' (although in this case they seemed very positive). But I was deeply disappointed by the lack of transparency and honesty. If you guys feel undecided and need more time, that's ok but please be upfront, inform and don't create false expectations in candidates heads. I planned all my time accordingly, took a day off to fly to Amsterdam, just to find out one day before the flights that the flights won't happen at all. This is very unprofessional and disrespectful towards anyone.
In the end, I asked them to drop my candidacy and moved on with another pending offer. In a way, I am feeling grateful about how things have worked out as I experienced this kind of treatment (being indecisive, making up stories, etc.) and realised that in any case I would not want to work in a low transparency environment.
