I applied in-person. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Sylvan Learning Centers (Boston, MA) in Jul 2014
Interview
I walked in (no appointment or even prior information about Sylvan) and sat down with the Director of Education to inquire about the company. She asked questions about my teaching methods and past positions held. I was immediately offered a position, as math instructors were in high demand. A background check was performed, and the slowness of that was the only difficult part of the process.
The interview was very casual and felt more like a relaxed conversation than a formal evaluation. It mainly consisted of going through my resume, where I was asked to talk about my past experiences, projects, and roles in more detail. The interviewer seemed interested in understanding what I specifically contributed in each position, how I approached challenges, and what I learned from those experiences. There wasn’t much technical questioning; instead, the focus was on my background, my thought process, and how my experiences connect to the role. Overall, it felt low-pressure and gave me the chance to expand on my resume in a more personal and detailed way.
