      Study Abroad Advisor Interview

      Aug 24, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      College Station, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Texas A&M University (College Station, TX) in Jun 2021

      Interview

Very lengthy process of over 3 months from application - though they stated that they wanted a quick hire. Two rounds of committee interviews - the short half-hour screening and a two hour final. Interestingly, the director of the department was not involved. Typical fare of skills/knowledge and psycho-social questions. In the end, they hired someone with much less experience - not surprising as the person who contacted me to arrange the interview said they were looking for "fresh faces."

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Describe a time that you failed at handling multiple tasks at the same time.

      Study Abroad Advisor I Interview

      Declined offer
      Positive experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Texas A&M University (College Station, TX) in Jun 2011

      Interview

I was first contacted to schedule a phone interview. The phone interview lasted less than an hour. I was placed on speakerphone and questioned by a panel of 4 people. Typical interview questions related to the job and my experience. I was then contacted for a long interview in-person. I sat in a room with a panel of 4 people and again described my experience and answered typical interview questions. I was asked about various topics, such as working with international students, crisis management, database management, creativity, etc. Then I had to schedule a time to submit a written response to a given scenario. There was a 30 minute time-limit and I had to pick one of 4 scenarios. The scenarios were typical situations that might be encountered as a study abroad advisor and the objective is to answer in a way that reflects how you would handle the situation in real life. It took about 20 days from the initial request to interview until the job offer.

      Question 1

There were no difficult or unexpected questions. But, of course, after the interview I thought of ways I could have answered some of the questions better had it not been for nerves.
