I was invited to come into the store for an interview, showed up on time but was asked to wait and “look around” (later found out this was commonplace while they observe you). The interview was conducted on the sales floor towards the back of the store. I was asked quite a few repetitive, pre-determined, questions. At one point I wasn’t sure if I was not communicating clearly enough or if the interviewer just wasn’t listening (or perhaps just not able to understand my answers) but I was asked a few questions more than once, which got a little annoying. I could tell they were trying to gauge my age as the interview progressed. I was almost asked “how old …” before the question quickly turned to “when did you graduate” even though the answer was on my resume right in front of the one interviewing me!
Even though I’m certain I had the qualifications for their management training program and could very well have succeeded at it, I suspect the fact that I didn’t quite look like one of their customers/employees, and clearly wasn’t in my 20’s anymore, lead to a quick rejection (an automated email sent at 3:16 am). I later heard from recently departed employees of this store that in fact they pretty much decide within a few seconds of seeing you whether or not you’re going to be hired.
I’m sort of glad I did not get offered the position now (based on what I experienced and heard from former employees) as it seems what they’re looking for in employees is more about how they look then anything substantive.
