I applied for a position in Singapore where the job description did not state a Mandarin Chinese language proficiency requirement. During the recruiter call I was informed that it was something that preferred. The recruiters seem competent, despite a few lapses in communication. The interview setup process was shoddy. My first technical interview was supposed to be in English with an interviewer who is proficient in English, and another who isn't. The English-speaking interviewer did not attend the interview, and I attempted the rest of the interview in Mandarin Chinese. This was also the point where the team divulged that the product management team this role will work with communicates mainly in Mandarin Chinese. I pushed back on a design challenge / exercise to re-design a live, active website that belongs to them, and was informed that the 'business units' decided to accede to my request. Throughout the process I still had no idea who the hiring manager for the role was. The designer interviewers I spoke to seem competent. Their recruitment process however is still immature, nowhere near FAANG quality.
