I applied through other source. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Toptal in Jan 2022
Interview
For the first step I talked to a guy to ensure my English is good.
The second interview was a Codility test.
The third interview is where things went bad. After a chat about my skills, the interviewer gave me a coding exercise. I had an almost working solution but the time ran out. He ended the interview.
I’ve passed interviews at Facebook, Amazon, Google, and other top companies. It’s bizarre that I failed this one.
I’ve also interviewed engineers when I worked at some top companies. We evaluate on many factors and never fail someone if they don’t finish. Usually we have a conversation on what they would have done next if they had more time.
Interviewing is an imperfect process and failing people this way filters out many great engineers.
Guess I’ll try again in a month…

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Toptal (Cape Town) in Jun 2026
Interview
The interview process has been structured and professional so far. It started with the initial application and screening, followed by an online coding assessment with algorithm-style questions focused on correctness, edge cases, and problem solving under time pressure. After completing that stage, I was invited to schedule a live technical interview. Communication has been clear, with detailed instructions about the interview format, environment requirements, screen sharing, and expectations around working without external assistance. The process feels rigorous and time-sensitive,.
