      Software Engineer Interview

      Apr 14, 2021
      Anonymous employee
      Los Angeles, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at TuSimple (Los Angeles, CA) in Mar 2021

      Interview

The overall experience was great. I already accepted the offer. I am looking forward to my first day at Tusimple. First I got referred for position Software Engineer, C++ role by one of the employees on Feb 18th, 2021. And their response was fast. I had two screenings on Mar, 5, 2021. Then I had 4 virtual onsites. I did not do well in the first round, I thought I would fail, but I actually got the offer within one week. I offered my price, and they gave me a quick response. I accepted it without debating.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

First Tech Screening is leetcode medium and we need to compile and run and test. Second Tech Screening is a tree related problem I have never seen. With some hint, I was able to solve it. First onsite was a leetcode medium-hard one, but the interviewer gave it a different scenario and the problem was to implement an iterator out of it, different from the leetcode one. I did not resolve it timely. And he also asked me some C++ related questions, e.g. multithreading, and more specifically(atomic), which I also did not gave the ideal answer.(I believe there was some miscommunications and I did not get his point). The second one is also a leetcode style problem, string-related. Along with some project manage e.g. build/integration problems. The third one is all about C++, e.g. basic concepts of C++11 above, and some C++ basic concepts coding as well (compile and run). The fourth one is a fantastic one. It is the product manager round, we had a great discussion, related to OS concepts like process/thread/memory/cache, C++ related multithreading, project related, unit test, debugging skills etc.

1 HR phone call. In the phone call, you will be asked your interest. I didn’t receive any further response even I already followed up. So I think I didn’t be considered to move on to the next process

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through college or university. I interviewed at TuSimple

      Interview

Absolutely horrible communication. I emailed to reschedule well in advance of the requested 24 hour window and had to follow up 3 times in order to get a response. When finally starting the interview, the interviewer informs me that I must be implementing my solution in C++ because its "company policy" (even though in the email I was told I can use any language I want). When I proceeded to tell him this, I was met with a blunt "well I don't know this language". Interviewer did a horrible job explaining the prompt and explaining himself when I would ask for clarifications. Honestly a waste of time
