      Art Director Interview

      Jan 25, 2021
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Tushy in Nov 2020

      Interview

I applied for this role and was asked to setup an interview. I gave my availability, then was told that before I can interview I have to complete a design project. I had to create a landing page, two emails, and 9 digital ads. This took me over 16 hours, and was a ton of work to do before even having an initial interview to see if I wanted the job. I had about 4 days to complete the project. I submitted everything then never heard back. I followed up about a week later and they replied saying that they had already filled the position. I was so mad because I had spent so much time on this project, didn't even get an interview, didn't get to present my work, didn't get a response or feedback, and I had to reach out to them to see that they hired someone. After telling them that I was disappointed that I never heard back, they later came back saying that they lost my project and that's why I never got a response. Then the owner asked to setup a meeting with me. I had no clue what to expect since they said that they had already hired someone. Through the meeting, the owner Miki was eating and seemed very disinterested, and seemed like they just set it up as a pity meeting. Then at the end of the meeting she said that they are now hiring two art directors and this was actually an interview. I was so confused. Then about three weeks later I got a reject email from them saying that they hired someone else. And in reality I'm sure they were never hiring two art directors, were just trying to cover up their mistake.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Tushy in Apr 2021

      Interview

I was hesitant about the company in the first place because I know there had been lots of internal issues at the founder's previous company Thinx, but I took the initial interview with Miki and it wound up being a very positive experience. She asked me to complete a pretty in depth design test consisting of a landing page, several email ads and then an open ended mood board/design section. They provided a lot of the assets so it wasn't terribly difficult, but it was extremely time consuming - more than a days worth of work. I sent the design test through and then didn't hear anything back. I followed up a week later with Miki (as she was my primary contact) and she said she wanted me to interview with the CEO Jason and the CMO. That's where everything fell apart. The time for my 2nd interview was pushed twice and then they were 30 minutes late when we finally had the interview. The CEO joined the video call while clearly walking down the street. It was extremely distracting and unprofessional. It was a lot of rapid fire strategy questions, and some questions about my past work. But notably he barely asked about the design test and even admitted later on he hadn't fully looked at it. After 30 minutes exactly he wrapped up the call and left me absolutely no time to ask questions (which after the way that interview was run I had a lot). I heard nothing for a week and followed up again with Miki. She said they loved my work and background, but felt the opened ended design portion of my test wasn't in the right direction for them and asked if I would be able to re-do it. I had a little free time so even against my better judgement I agreed to re-do it and sent it over promptly. I never even got a confirmation that they received it, and haven't heard anything since. I stopped following up since even if they were to make an offer it felt like a potentially toxic work environment. Would highly recommend staying away from this company for the foreseeable future. They seem completely disorganized and not very respectful of the people they are trying to hire.
