3 steps interview process.
I. One week after I submitted my application on UBS website, I got a call from the HR. She was kind and wanted to book me a slot for another, longer phone call. We did it few days later: I was asked about my availablity to relocate, some recent changes in EU regulation (quite unexpected question from HR) and general questions about me and my background. N.B. I asked about the recruiting process and I was told that it was composed of one additional interview with the hiring manager at their office in Krakow. Only ONE, maybe followed by a short phone call. I was asked if I was ok with travelling to Krakow without flight or accommodation allowances and I said yes. I thought it was going to be only one interview.. I was misled. Also, I was told that the recruiting process would be over within the first days of May. It took one month more and the whole process ended the first days of June. Probably, because I had to find out by myself that "I was not a match".
II. One week after the phone call with the HR, I received an email with an invitation to meet the hiring manager at the UBS Zabierzów offices in Krakow. Everything as expected, so I confirmed and flew to Krakow. I met the "hiring manager" in the last week of April. It happened that I met her but she was not the hiring manager and she was not alone. There was also another, unannounced person that was there to test my French (not required for the role but stated in my CV). Interview went ok. Common, behavioural questions: how do you work under pressure? How do you work in team? Why would you relocate here? The interview in French was very easy. I asked one more time about the interview process. They told me with my surprise that there was another step with the "true" hiring managers from Zurich. I was disappointed and some feeling leaked from my face. It was my dreamjob so I kept quiet and I said that I was eventually ready for another travel to Krakow.
III. I got another invitation to the final rounds of interview with the hiring mangers. The interview was set on the 15th of May, so we were already out of the scheduled timing. Again, I didn't want to sound too strict or even fussy: moreover, I know how a firm's life can be subect to changes. As long as they didn't cancel the position, I was happy and determined to get the job. The interview with the hiring managers was easy: roughly 1/2 hour each, they were kind and nice, I was given more information about the role and the department. They seemed reluctant about my availability to relocate. They asked me about it several times: at first I felt honoured because they seemed to value my effort; but I got that same questions 3 times each interviewer so I was starting to think that it my choice to relocate was my own business. I was left with a weird feeling and they gave me a very vague timeline about when I was supposed to hear from them. I went back home and I waited. I travelled there TWICE, at my own expenses. A feedback was the least I was expecting from them. After almost 3 weeks (one week later the blurred deadline they gave to me) I sent an email to ask about the status of my application. The morning after I was told I got a rejection from the HR, although the feedback was positive (not the same girl I spoke with the first time). I asked about a more detailed explanation, because I wanted to understand and to improve. My request ended unanswered.
Of course, being rejected is never nice. Even more when you spent 1k € for an interview process. It was a dream job to me so I didn't care. But what if I could not allow such expenses? Where is the meritocracy, UBS? I think I deserved at least a clear feedback. I am very disappointed.
