      I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at UC Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, CA) in Jun 2012

      Interview

      Varies depending on department. Some do interview with 2 - 9 people in a group or 1 on 1. It's usually one interview and a job offer. My first interview was a 1 on 1 with the Chair of the department and the Business Officer which consisted of questions regarding my experience and my vision for the department. Second interview in a lateral move was a 1 on 1 with each person in the department, which consisted of three short 1 on 1's with the Executive Assistant, Analyst and Vice Chancellor. Third interview consisted of a group/panel of 9 which asked one question each from the set of questions below.

      • Tell me about a time that you pulled a team together. How did you build moral? • Why are you seeking a job change? • Why did you leave your last job? • Tell me of an occasion in which you achieves something as a member of a team. What was your role in the group and how was the project organized? • Tell me of a time you have worked under time constraints. How did you get the job done? • What do you know about UCSB? • If you could improve one thing about your job performance, what would it be? • If all jobs paid equally, what kind of job would you like to have? • What are your long-term career goals? • How do you feel about your career progress to date? • What career objectives haven‘t you met? • What are you looking forward to? • Describe different jobs that were most productive to you. Describe those that were the least productive. • When have people you were working with been dishonest? What did you do? • When have you felt pressured to compromise your integrity? • What have you had to do in your professional life that has been particularly unpleasant? • What is the most important aspect of your current job? • How have you grown most in the last few years? • What have you done under pressure that you later wished you hadn‘t? • In your recent position, how have you demonstrated initiative? • How do you keep yourself and your worksite organized? • Tell us of a time you could not finish a job due to lack of support or incomplete information. How did you try to remedy the situation? • What is your experience working in a confidential setting or with confidential matters? • Describe your customer service philosophy. • Describe your computer background; what types of computer software packages are you familiar with and what types of projects have you worked on? • What is your experience dealing with undergraduates, graduates, faculty, and international scholars? • Please elaborate on your knowledge of undergraduate/graduate programs at UCSB. • Have you had experience coordinating schedules? • A student has come to the front desk shouting the Billing Office will not remove a charge from the BARC and that s/he has now lost priority status in class enrollments. S/he becomes increasingly angry as you try to gather the facts, what might you do? • Give some examples of your ability to work well under pressure and with frequent interruptions while still performing accurate work and providing excellent customer service. • What have been some of the more rewarding aspects of your present or past positions? • What type of setting do you prefer to work in? • How do you resolve conflict between conflicting groups of individuals? • What do you see as some challenges in transitioning into this organization? • What are your long-term career goals? How do you see this position fitting with those goals? • What do you expect from a supervisor? • What feedback have you received in your employment history that has helped you professionally? • If it came down to you and one other person for the position, what one thing would you want to tell us about yourself? • How would you describe your interactions with your co-workers? • Describe the best person you have ever worked for. • Describe your computer skills. Are you familiar with Word, Excel, Email, Internet, etc.? • What is your ideal working environment? • What type of supervisory style do you work best with? • As a member of the ____ department, you will come into contact with a diverse group of people. Generally describe your experience and style of working with staff members or customers from diverse or underrepresented populations. • What does it mean to you to provide good customer service? • What is your experience working under tight deadlines? • Describe a time you had a conflict with a supervisor, peer, or customer and how you handled it. • If I were to call your current/previous supervisor, what characteristics would he/she use to describe you?
