Interview
1. Started with a semi-lengthy online application. Your basic contact information, resume, cover letter, and reference information, as well as around a half dozen mini essay questions. Questions related to the opportunity gap, feedback, and challenges you've previously faced as an educator.
2. I was emailed the next day requesting a phone interview with someone from recruitment. Later that week I had my roughly 30 minute interview and it was pretty standard. The interviewer was very nice and asked me questions about how I align to Uncommon's mission and values as well as questions relating to data and student achievement. He was very upfront about the mandatory hours as an employee and gave me time for any clarifying questions.
3. About an hour after my phone interview I was emailed by a recruiter saying I made it to the in-person interview round. They sent me a scripted lesson plan that I was to teach to a few students and that I was to make little changes to. The lesson they sent me was for 50 minutes and I was only given a 25 minute window to teach so it was a bit challenging to adapt to this timeframe but nothing crazy. After the lesson, I interviewed with the principal and debriefed the lesson followed by a pretty standard interview. Principal was super friendly and it felt more like a conversation than an actual interview. I was given a verbal offer on the spot and my contract was sent later that afternoon.
