I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Uncommon Schools (Brooklyn, NY) in Mar 2018
Interview
I submitted my application and received feedback within a few days. I was asked to answer a few questions regarding my interest in teaching at Uncommon and my perspective on topics such as discipline. After I submitted my response I was invited back for an interview. I was flying in from a out of state so it was a bit of challenge to coordinate an interview on such short notice. The recruitment staff are incredibly considerate and worked to accommodate my schedule.
I interviewed about 2-3 weeks after my initial application submission. I was sent a prepared lesson and asked to memorize the content and create any supporting materials. The interview process can last between 4-8 hours depending on how in depth you go. Its a very immersive experience that allows you to see whether or not you fit into the school's environment and culture. I was able to observe classes, ask current teachers questions and review the lesson plan before leading it in front of a small class of students. Afterwards, I was provided feedback on the lesson and engaged in a mini professional development which gives some idea of what the weekly professional developments might look like.
The actual interview was last. The whole process is incredibly transparent and allows you to make an informed decision. The staff are welcoming, open and ready to answer questions. Be prepared to take notes and comment on your observations and experiences, its a very interactive interview process. Try to memorize the lesson plan, it'll never go according to plan so the more prepared you are the easier it will be to adapt. Preparing additional materials like posters or notes will help keep you on track. The students are prepared for the lesson and are ready to participate.
